Seven days and counting

Sunday
We slept untill 7:30 this morning, wow. As our bodies continue to adjust our minds still are having trouble contemplating the amount of time we will be here. Several families are leaving next week for Moscow and then home. They look haggered and ready to get out of town.

Today we did not get to see Lilia. Our driver and translator are off for the day. We spent our time going to the store, watching movies, and looking out the window. At the store we purchased a quart of butter mik for our cereal. Hey we like butter milk on our cereal! Yes, it was what we meant to buy, you should try it. After we poured the butter milk in the sink we had sandwiches with mystery cheese spread and mystery meat. It was actually good. OK I have a story from yesterday. We went out to eat and when the waitress handed me a fork I said "Zdras-tvwee-tya" (Hello) instead of "Spai-see-ba" (Thank you). I didn't think this was a funny story but my wife thinks otherwise.

The sunset over the Volga is beautiful, and there are a lot of small cruise ships anchored along the pier. The local Astrakhan mechants are on the pier selling their wares. Dried, smoked fish seems to be the big attraction, although the watermelon are supposed to be wonderful. We just don't have any way of cutting one if we bought it.

We went to church this morning. Marie and I were in nursery so we worshipped with the littles ones as we played with trains, cars and dolls. Even Caleb came in for a couple minutes 'cause the guest preacher preached for at least 45 minutes. He is a retired pastor and you know how us old guys can go on and on.....
Our thermometer reads 123 in the sun and the car thermometer read 103 on the way home.
Are there any dairies in Russia? I bet Jonah could find some part time work if he looked or maybe he could start his first international branch of Sanitary Stainless.
Our trap has come up empty the last two nights. Tonight we try a new location. Caleb caught a 3 or 4 pound catfish day before yesterday. He got it close enough to see but it broke the line when I tried to pull it ashore. Excitement ran very high for a time.
He really is a hard worker. Friday he picked up rocks, shoveled dirt into the trailer, got in the dog pen and cleaned up the dog bed that got torn up by stupid one and stupid two. Stupids three and four went home Thursday. We spread mulch yesterday and moved sprinklers all aroung the yard.
Tyler came over yesterday to play and that was a good diversion for him. Tyler's family brought their 4 wheeler so they were a bit distracted and didn't completely scratch Caleb's itch for play time but I think they are coming back.
Yesterday afternoon Caleb let me know how terrible this state was. It was no fun and he wanted to be home. He also said that he has had no fun since he got here. None! What an amazing sad face he can produce. It really breaks my heart to see him sad but I try not to show it too much. After we talked about how bad things were I finally told him he probably needed to take a nap. He agreed with that but didn't like my suggetion he suck on his thumb and eat dirt until you came back. Everything in his world was a disaster. 5 minutes later though he talked Marie into Playstation and all was well. This morning he wanted to stay here forever.
We have had several pillow fights, about three tickle me but don't tickle me fights, three crawl into bed with Papa in the morning sessions(I really like those even when they come very early)and some great water hockey tournaments.
All in all it is going about as well as can be expected. You can tell he misses his old life and is trying very hard to be strong while you are gone. He is a really neat kid. Thanks for leaving the country!

Privet! Sounds like you are trying to beat the time there while we are beating the heat. So, one thing you can be glad is that you are away from over 100F during the day. Do you have a chance to be over with everything earlier? I can imagine that it is frustrating to hang around and wait while the language and enviroment is strange. At the same time there is a bright, little star Lilia that you are about to bring home, so it is worth to hang in there...

Do we need to send you a care package or another hot pot?

KB's goal is to jump off the trampoline in the lake 300 times. He only made about 20 jumps today and he is exhausted. He could hardly eat any dinner and is watching a movie until bed time, if he makes it to the end of the movie. We have a mystery going on with our new ac unit. It has cut off the last 2 days in the heat of the day and just when we get the guest house cooled off and think we'll be spending the night there, it starts working! We're hopeful that we can get it fixed tomorrow. We are very grateful to have the lake in this heat! Even the dogs are beginning to appreciate the lake.

Hey there. I finally had a chance to sit down and read your posts from the past week. Did you hear that Alan got the job at Boeing? He doesn't have a start date yet...needs to do a drug test, clearance check, etc. He can't wait to give notice at the credit union. He's hoping that when he gives his 2 weeks notice, they say, just leave...I guess that's what they told the last person to leave. It would be nice if he could have a break before starting the new job, especially since I'll be going to the doctor about a zillion times during the next few weeks. Everything has been going well with that so far, but tomorrow I start with 2 shots a day...so we'll see how that goes. I think I'd rather put up with shots then eat Russian 'food' for a month. ;)

Glad to hear such great news from your side of the world (with the exception of the hot plate incident). What a blessing that you are able to post and read comments. Let us know what else you want to hear about...we can bore you with details of the 100+ weather.

We miss seeing all the Copes at church. Can't wait till there are FOUR of you to see!

Julie :)

P.S. OK...this page is acting goofy. It wouldn't take my password, so I tried to create a new account, but I think it logged me in as "The Wilkinsons" anyway...we'll see how it appears when I hit publish. I think it's time for bed!
